Hi all,
Second cook is in the books, did the second half (other side) of the beef ribs and pork butt.  Everything turned out great, but I have a question for Maverick wireless digital thermometers ("Redi-Chek" or similar models).  

First, the receiver loses the signal every 15 minutes or so.  I can't be more than 15-20 ft away from the sensor.  When I lose the signal I have to get up, put the shoes, jacket, etc on and move closer to the sensor unit and the signal will return automatically.  Any workarounds here?

Also, how to people leave the meat probes in with the lids closed?  I feed the cooker cooker probe which is a lot smaller through the probe port hole, so that's no problem.  I can't fit the meat probe through there though.  Maybe if I do it in reverse and try to get the plug end through.  Otherwise I think I'd have to shut the lid over the wire or leave the lid cracked open and lose all my heat.

How have folks gotten around these issues?

I use a maverick and just close the lid on the wires. Your other options are running it down the stack or drilling out a hole and inserting a groumet that the probe slides in thru. As far as connection problems it could be a defect in the unit or some type of interference with the unit.

I have the Maverick ET-732 and so far (4 years) have not lost the signal. I don't know the reason for your signal loss but the unit is designed for a continuous signal. There are 2 ways to resync the ET-732, which I assume you tried. If not, check your manual.

My rig did not come with a probe port so I had to drill one. I drilled the smallest hole I could that would accommodate inserting one probe at a time and both wires - the plug end will not fit through the hole I drilled nor the Lang probe hole. I don't think it's a good idea to close the lid on the probe wires (they're not designed to be crushed) or to leave the lid cracked open -- it defeats the purpose of the probe hole.

Buy yourself a Thermoworks smoke and you won't have anymore connection problems.  I had the 732 like you have and had nothing but problems with it.  You can run the wire out the door and close it on it without a problem.

Vandy,
Any issues getting the Thermoworks probes into the cooking chamber through the standard probe port?  They look a little larger with the silicon connector.

I think I'm going to make the purchase, the reviews I've read are all great.  My Maverick is garbage and I'm returning it after three cooks where the wireless signal has been dropped every 10-15 minutes when the received has been placed no more than 15 feet away in direct view, separated only by a window.

No problem with getting the probes through the port, if you get the Thermoworks Smoke you will love it.

Glad to help, good luck with you brisket cook!  If you need any help during your cook you can always check out amazingribs.com there are a lot of people on there that are always willing to help out and give lots of advise.  Lots of Lang users that know a lot more than I do.

The Smoke digital unit worked really well for the brisket cook this weekend.  The brisket didn't turn out so great, but it was my first attempt and maybe I'll make  separate post about that.  I like how the smoke unit updated so quickly - every 15 second I believe.  It was easy to use and when it lost signal, which it did about four times when I went inside, it either let me know quickly that the signal was lost or regained it spontaneously within the next update cycle.  My only problem with the Smoke was that the probes did not fit through the stock Lang probe holes and got stuck at the hub connecting the hubs to the wires.  As I result I had to close the lid over the wires, which I wasn't thrilled about.

All in all, miles beyond the the Maverick in my own experience/opinion.

I don't know why your probes would not fit through the probe port, I just tried the curved meat probe in my Lang and it went in ok I put the metal probe through the hole then rotated it around so the whole thing would go in and it went in just fine.  Maybe they are making the holes smaller or something.  I also don't know why you were losing the signal on the Smoke either, mine has never lost the signal once it picks it up.  How far away were you from the main unit when it lost the signal?  If that persists I think I would give their customer service a call, they are great and maybe they can help you figure that out.
