First cook with basket

Finished up my charcoal basket, (12x15)  7 at the back and 5 up front for my 36 patio. Initially I was thinking of filling the basket full with lump and a few oak chunks on top to start with. Would this be too much lump?  Im planning on cooking one 9 lb boneless butt @225-250, air temp will be  low 40s.

Fender: I think with 3/4 full basket you're going to zoom by 225F to 250F pretty fast and then you'll have to back down but experiment and see what happens.

Usually for 225F to 250F , I start with 1/2 a basket of lump and 2 or 3 coke can size pieces of camp fire wood, which burns hot and fast. That gets me a nice bed of coals in about 20 minutes. Because hardwood is so expensive for me in Tucson I have to conserve so I don't add the oak (which isn't available to me at any price. I buy chunks at Home Depot) or whatever wood I'm using until after I put the meat on the cooker. At 140F to 145F meat internal temp I stop adding wood because the meat won't take anymore smoke and use lump for the rest of the cook. Incidently, I use CHERRY chunks for the pork butt but that's just my preference.

The above is just my opinion, for what it's worth, and what works for me.

The 1/2 basket sounds good to me and will add wood as needed, I haven't used cherry before, but have a good supply of black cherry trees on the property. I"ll have to try some.
