Fire box vent

Anyone cut a vent hole in the top of the firebox to
Let more heat into the warmer? If so post some pics!
animal

That is an option I had Ben put on mine, there are 2 holes with adjustable handles
animal

You can see them in this picture. There is a handle on either side of the firebox to adjust them, I use them a lot, it also came with a steel plate to block them off when I dont want to use them.

Awesome! How warm does it get in there?

Thought about getting this option, guy at Lang talked me out of it.

One thing I'm curious about. Opening those vents has to take heat away from main smoker cooker.... has to.  If you were JUST going to use the warmer to cook a steak or whatever in the warmer box, I could see the uses.

I crack them open for a lot of things I want cooked in the warmer, corn ,brats even lasagna. you can also control the heat loss by closing the top vents on the warmer. I love having them. It gives me more options. I can run the cooker at 225 and cook any temp I want in the warmer. Closing them off completely is what the metal plate that sits on top of the vents is for.

i can see not adding this option on a build , what was their reason on talking you out of it ? just curious .
KevinWI

He stated the box runs fine without it and said you could cook out of it too...he didn't as much talk me out of it as he did just stating how perfect it worked without the mod.  come to think of it.

I'm not sure what temp you can get the warmer up to without that mod, but I'd guess if you open up both vents on top of the box wide open and close off the chimney on the main cooker, you can get temp up there?

So are you happy with firebox mod? Does it cause any issues in regards to heat loss.
animal

very happy with it and I have no problems with it

Hi Animal, I just ordered a 36 deluxe, with the cook chamber to warming box vent deleted, and then added the dual vents over the firebox instead.

Questions...

Since I wont have the vent from the cook chamber in the way, Im thinking of having Lang lower my drip tray away from the lower rack, like 1/2" above the block off plate handle, or the vent flaps when the are open (whichever is taller?) - Do you see any downside to doing this?

With the firebox vents, are you able to get the warmer up to 250ish without losing your draft, or drastically affecting the main cooking chambers temp?

Thanks for the help!

I hardly ever use the smoker to warmer box vents, I mainly use the firebox to warmer,  it is doing the same thing except I can really ramp up the temp, there is a gap of about 3/16 around the vents anyway for clearance so they can turn so even when closed I get heat and smoke. You will be fine, I have never really measured how hot I can get the warmer but I can keep it cooler for holding food or open them up and I can see the fire so I can get her pretty hot
tawd77

Perfect, I think I will be happy without the cook chamber to warming box vent. since that vent wont be in the back of my warming box, I was considering lowering the drip pan to about 1/2" above the firebox vent blockoff plates handle. That way I can get to the drip pan easier even if I am cooking on both racks in the warmer. Your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your help!

Drip pan?
animal

I have an angled plate with an angle iron put the side to drain off grease
tawd77

I thought there was a drip pan, directly below the lower grate, in the warming box? I guess not?
animal

Nope not on mine, they might have changed the design, mine is around 5 years old

Ah ok, Another member just sent me a pic of his, and it has a drip tray under the lower rack. I guess I wont bother with it, I will just see what it has in it when it arrives... Thanks!

Can you post that picture for us. Thanks!

Fire vents

Do they operate independently or do both have to be either opened or closed?
Biskitman

Do they work independently or work together?
animal

independently
Biskitman

Wow if they work independently you can really dial in the temp in the box I am guessing!

I got the dampers in the top of the firebox in my 36 hybrid deluxe on wagon wheel cart.  When seasoning I opened dampers and got the warmer to almost 500 degrees!  I love having the option to cook in the warmer if I needed to for large cooks.  I figure I can get about 4 additional butts or 2-3 racks of ribs if I stack them maybe 4, so the warmer does add options.  Its a no brainer in my opinion, why wouldn't you want the option of using it to cook if needed, and if not then use plates to cover it and cook normal?  To each his own and that's why they make chevys and fords!
