Deluxe Warmer Box- Pros/Cons

Getting ready to buy either the 36" Deluxe Stretch or 48" Deluxe Smoker Cooker for home use.  What are the pro and cons of adding the Deluxe Warmer Box?

Pros are you can keep food warm in it until you are ready for it, I used mine to cook some baked beans in it and that worked out pretty good.  You should be able to cook some fish in it but I have not tried that yet.  I have not really used it enough to be able to say anything against it so I don't really know the cons yet except I just don't really need it I guess but as long as it is there I will probably use it occasionally.

I use the warmer box for heating up beans or hanging sausage. It doesn't run as hot as the cook chamber. I've seen that some had an option of adding a damper off the fire box to allow the warmer box to run at higher temperatures.

Hey Eddie, I saw that option also but when I ordered my 36 inch hybrid I talked to Ben Lang and he told me that the 36 did not really need that option because the warmer temp on that model runs closer to the cooking chamber temps, and that it would cost about another $1000.00 to add it.  The temp on mine runs anywhere from about 25 to 75 degrees below what the cooking chamber runs depending on how long the cook is.  From what Ben told me the warmer temp on the bigger models runs a lot cooler that the 36.  Anyway I opted to not spend the extra $1000.00 to add the dampers.

$1000 sounds steep for a damper installed. I have a 48". Rarely see the temp over 200 in the warmer box.

That is exactly what I thought when he told me that, but apparently there are two parts to the system and he said that they were 500 each so I took a deep breath and told him no thanks.  the highest I have seen on mine is 275 and the cooking chamber was at around 325 or so and was holding that for about 2 hours.  I was cooking a Turkey at the time and the temp outside was around 70.

When I bought my 36 I didn't add the warmer box but after I received and cooked on it a few times I decided it would come in handy. I called Lang and learned it was too late - I'd need a weight for the front section and it was a fortune to ship. I decided I didn't need it anyway but it sure would have looked trick.  Instead, I added a Santa Maria cooker on top of the fire box.

Once I tried cooking a cast iron pot of beans on the top of the fire box and it took the paint off the top of the fire box!!

I have to say that I am glad I went with the warmer box.  At the time of order it is only 300.00 extra but I bet it would be expensive to add it afterward.

I just ordered my 36 hybrid deluxe patio first week of Jan.  So it has not even been built yet, but I figured this 36 is going to be a one time investment so had all the options added that I knew about.  Including the ports from the firebox to the warmer.  They told me that there are removable plates that cap it off if you don't want the intense heat.

Figure better to have and not use then want and not have.  I can always use more cooking space and warmer space.  This also made it easier for me to go with the 36 instead of the 48.

Good luck and enjoy the process.  The people in the office are easy to talk to and good at answering your questions.  At one point Ben Lang answered the phone and anwsered my questions.  Real good experience and excited for its arrival.

^^^^  Thanks for the great responses.

One other question.  I'm a big fan of wireless digital dual probe thermometer.  One for real time meat temperature and the other for internal temperature of smoker.  Since the Lang seems to have tight door latches, has anyone drilled probe ports into their Lang?
Fdh1965

Lang told me, smokers come with holes for temp probes.

Don't worry about that the new ones already have that in mind with a plug that you can remove to accomadate that

Could you post a pic of the grill on top of the fire box?  it sounds like a neat idea.

Dsarphie: They're already posted. Go to "show pictures"  and on the second page look for "Tri Tip". The Santa Maria grill was developed especially for that piece of meat. Then for better pictures go 10 topics down and look for "additions to Lang 36 Original".

I said in the article it was an exact fit -- not exactly - I had to notch out the back lip of the Santa Maria Grill to fit around the chimney, which took about 2 minutes with a metal saber saw.
