bbq guru

Does any one out there use a bbq guru to help manage a steady and constant heat on a Lang. I'm having a hard time keeping my heat steady, one time I'm hot and next time I,m cool. Any suggestions to help me out.

Re: bbq guru

I thought about adding that unit or a similiar one (I forget the name) but no Lang owners on this forum had installed one so I decided against it. Really, you don't need one.

I have a fire box basket and I start out with it 1/2 to 3/4 full with the chimney and pin wheels open. Once I get to temp (250F to 275F) I control the temp with the pin wheels. I close the back one and control the temp with the front one.

These units are not "light it and forget it" -- you have to watch your temp. If it starts to drop I first give it a little more air with the front pin wheel but I know I'm going to have to add more fuel shortly and when I do I open both pin wheels and when it gets up to temp I go back to my original setting -- back closed and front open to some degree. Mate, it's just a learning curve we all had to go through.

Re: bbq guru

I have a bbq guru wifi that I use on my Stumps and I can literally go to bed at 250 degrees and wake up at 250 degrees, worth it's weight in gold on THAT smoker. There are a few out there that have adapted the guru to their Langs but you can't just walk away and leave it. They say it will keep a constant temp but when wood or coal starts to get low you've got to be there to feed it again anyway. I haven't used it on my Lang and probably never will. For the cost of the guru or a stoker it's probably not worth it to try solely on a stickburner. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the advise, I appreciate it.

Did you install the guru, I have the 60 deluxe and havethe guru to install, but am un-easy in drilling a hole in it

No hole needed, in face I would bolt a magnet to the dog dish so I didn't have to remove the pinwheel if I was to use one

I like the magnet idea, I have the 84 tandem trailer and was looking into buying the Guru. It doesn't say anything after though if it worked or not.
