36 new or 48 used ?

Okay I am up in the air I am looking at a used 48 or a new 36 both are patio models the 48 is said to be two years old it doesn't look bad in the pictures and it is only 250 miles from me in Ohio, I was concerned at first because the firebox is rusted but it looks like that is a normal problem just need to keep it oiled 36 is probably as big as I need but the price is right on the 48 I do not have shipping would it be feasible to only smoke like three racks of ribs on the 48. Thanks in advance I have been smoking on a big green egg large size food turns out great I just need more room and man those Langs sure look good. !!!

I have the 48 patio deluxe. Plenty of room to do 8-10 slabs of baby backs.

Thanks Eddie, have you ever done like only 2 or 3 slabs at a time or is the 48 to big for that ?

Ohiophil: What is the asking price for the 48? It's only 2 years old so it's probably in good shape -- a little rust is easy to clean up. The only way to compare the 36 to the 48 on the Lang web site is by grate size because the don't give overall dimensions for the 48. The 48 doesn't appear to be to much bigger than the 36 and the fire box is 18X18 as compared to 17X17 on the 36. The bigger fire box is a plus. The 36 is a perfect size for my cooking and I'd never fill it up so I obviously wouldn't fill up the 48.

I think I understand what you're asking. It's no different than firing up your Green Egg for 1 hot dog. 250* to 275* in a Green egg is the same for a 36 or a 48. In other words, the cook chamber doesn't know how much meat is in it.

If it were me and the price was right, I'd go for the 48. I assume you live in Ohio -- my shipping was about $500 and I assume yours would be close. That brought my 36 to around $1500.00. Maybe you should take a look at it and see what you think -- it's not like driving 250 to look at a cheapo cooker -- these Lang's are indestructable.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your question.

No thanks for the answers here is a pic of the 48 he's asking $1300

And one more pic. I think I could clean it up pretty good washing it and oiling it down, I like to keep mine looking good.

Go with the 48. For the most part, always go one size bigger then you think you "need". As long as it checks out, being a used unit, I don't think you will regret going with the 48.

He'll probably take $1100 or maybe $1000. I agree with Carolina 'Q BBQ team, but I'd go for it because of the price -- you may never fill it up and I'll never fill up my 36. With a little sanding and paint it will look brand new. Grates look to be in good shape.

It's a $1800 unit plus shipping. Once you fix it up, you could re-sell it and get your money back. At $1100 plus 2.5 hours each way and you're still ahead price wise. As I said, my 36 was over $1500 and I had to wait 6 -8 weeks for it. You're buying a 48 for less than the price of a 36.

Good luck mate with your decision.

Ok he says $1200 is bottom dollar, used it for his restaurant he has now closed, he got it in spring of 2012 so it's smoked a lot of ribs 😃

Ohiophil,
What part of ohio are you from? I just recently had a 36 hybrid deluxe delivered, if you are close you are welcome to come and take a look at mine.  Bill

Alliance, thanks K80bill

Phil, I'm about 2 hours south out you in New Martinsville,WV.  Haven't done any ribs yet, would imagine that I could fit 6-8 racks on the smoker. Just did two 8lb butts yesterday , had 4 on there at one time with room for more. If you would like to see it let me know. Bill

What did you end up paying?? Regardless, you got a great deal!! These units are build like steam boilers -- you can't kill them. With a little elbow grease you'll have a nice looking unit. I'd have bought that rig in a minute.

$1200 a little surface rust but solid Thanks

Getting there also cleaned out fire chamber now learn how to hold temp.
