I think the first time I cleaned mine it was pretty bad but it was just smoke getting on it from the firebox so I took it out and used some Dawn dish washing liquid and hot water.  try a small spot on the lens to make sure it will come off first and if that doesn't work you might try some of the wax like cleaner that is used for ceramic stove tops with the cleaning pad that they also recommend for the same thing.  If your fog is the same as what gets on automotive headlight lenses then they also make a cleaning kit for those that you might try.  You might also try 3M plastic polish which is also recommended for plastic lenses and will take off some fog as long as it is not really deep.
