On the Lang face book, Ben suggested that fire bricks could be placed on top of the fire box to contain heat loss. I have the floor of the fire box lined with fire bricks and have zero heat loss from the bottom. I'm envious of my neighbor who has a Peoria Custom Cooker with a insulated fire box and he has zero heat loss all around the fire box -- all his heat goes where it's suppose to go, which into the cook chamber. He also uses less fuel than I do. His is just a more efficient fire box.

I could have purchased fire bricks from ACE or Tractor Supply (about $20.00 for a package of 6) but their size would involve some cutting to get them to fit on the Lang 36 patio so I'm trying a poor man's approach. I have some extra floor tiles from a batch I used to cover the Lang 36 shelf area -- I wanted to use SS but in the Tucson heat I could cook eggs on the SS so I used tile instead on the shelf.

Anyway, I laid a piece of alum foil (shinny side down) on the top of the fire box and laid 1.5 tiles on top. I'm hoping the tiles won't crack and am not sure they will contain the heat loss from the top of the fire box. If it doesn't work, I'm out 10 minutes of work and a few tiles and I'll buy the fire bricks.

I fire bricked my firebox..... after I saw and burnt my yard in the exact shape of the box and initial cooking chamber.

I lined the floor, backside and initial cooking chamber with fire brick. Then I lined the warmer box bottom to top it off.[/u]
